Hey, my name is Kyrie and as hard as it is to admit it, I am “The Queen of Procrastination.” For as long as I can remember I have always chalked up my need to wait last minute on EVERYTHING to “I just work better under pressure.” Anyone else ever used that line?
I remember being up until 3am completing papers and assignments that were due at 8. I told myself that I was a perfectionist so that’s really the reason it was taking me so long. WRONG! It’s because I wait way too long to start. And for most of my life, this process has worked out fine for me, but then came adulthood and #momlife.
Entrepreneurship entered my life about 3 years ago and if you have ever owned your own business, you know that procrastination KILLS productivity. You cannot have a thriving business if you wait until last minute on absolutely everything. It forced me to set better goals and stick to them.
Breaking old habits, especially ones you’ve had your entire life, is hard with a capital H! When you really dig deep, you’ll discover the only thing holding you back is fear, doubt, insecurity, and uncertainty. Is this you?
Here are five great procrastination hacks that have helped me on my journey to overcome task overwhelm! My advice is to pick ONE and implement it Right Now then slowly add another once you start creating new habits.
5 Procrastination Hacks To Overcome Task Overwhelm
Adding too many tasks to your daily to do list can be overwhelming. It’s also hard to determine which tasks take priority and should require immediate attention vs. waiting until later, tomorrow, or even next week.
I like use the brain dumping technique and write all the things that are floating around in my head on paper.
This technique creates clarity and provides direction. It also removes some of that overwhelm which gives me the power to actually start on my list which in turn decreases procrastination.

Procrastination Hack #1 – Have a Morning Routine
If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you’ll know I refer to my Morning Routine a lot. It has literally changed my life and my business. Please don’t overlook this part.
Procrastination is not your problem —–>>> Your mindset is the problem.
How you view your schedule, your to-do list, your ability to take on a project, etc. is the problem! So having a morning routine that resets your mind for ABUNDANCE and GROWTH is insanely crucial if you want to end procrastination for good.
If you are as desperate as I was to get your life together and start being productive and less scattered and disorganized then you will start with this step if you haven’t ever tried it before. I linked my morning routine in above to give you an idea of what I do. You’ll find many different routines out there. Create one specific to YOU!
Once you’ve mastered this step, you can move on to hack #2.
Procrastination Hack #2 – Focus on the Outcome
Okay this one is super duper important. Stop focusing on the task itself and start focusing on the OUTCOME!
Here’s the 3 questions you should ask yourself to motivate you to start:
What is the benefit to completing this task?
How will I feel once it’s complete?
How will feeling that way make an impact on my life?
Let’s go through a few examples:
Task – Folding and putting away 5+ loads of laundry (speaking from experience)
Benefit – The benefit is completion of the task and my house looking more organized and less cluttered.
Feeling – I will feel less stressed and anxious and so accomplished.
Impact – This will help me be more productive because my endorphins will give me more confidence resulting in completing more tasks.
Task – Sorting paperwork and organizing bills
Benefit – The benefit is finally facing the giant of paperwork overwhelm and marking that task off my list.
Feeling – I will feel less overwhelmed and stressed by my lack of organization skills.
Impact – This will help me be more aware of what I owe and what needs my immediate attention. I will feel more in control of my finances and life.
Task – Creating a financial budget
Benefit – The benefit is getting my finances in order and be more aware of where my money is going.
Feeling – I will feel less stressed about money and more encouraged to tackle my bills.
Impact – This will help me gain control of my life and tell my money exactly where to go so I can pay off more debt and save more.
This procrastination hack of focusing on the outcome will drastically help you tackle more tasks that seem big and overwhelming. Stop focusing on the negative feelings attached to the task and start focusing on all the positives.

Procrastination Hack #3 – The 5-Second Rule
Have you heard of Mel Robbins? She is such a huge inspiration of mine and she created a simple step that will help you develop the courage to overcome chronic procrastination even if you don’t feel like it. I’ll like her book below in the resource section.
For now let’s talk about that simple action step. It’s called the Five Second Rule. It’s a simple, yet powerful tool to push yourself “out of your head and into action.” Mel calls it a “heart-first decision.”
The origin of the 5-second rule is to resemble a rocket launch countdown. Here’s the point:
When you’re staring at that task on your to-do list, but you just can’t pull the trigger start counting 5-4-3-2-1-GO! TAKE ACTION
Sounds simple right? According to Mel, the 5-second rule is a “starting ritual that activates the brain prefrontal cortex, helping to change your behavior.” The good news is, as you repeat the 5-second rule you overwrite that pattern in your brain you want to get rid of, and the new habit establishes.
Now that you’re chipping away at the task, it’s time to get inspired!
Procrastination Hack #4 – Get Inspired
You’ve done the hard part…..you started! Now KEEP GOING.
I too have started tasks and worked on them for 15 min or even 5 and have quit and walked away. Don’t do that. Keep focusing on the outcome.
To stay motivated you want to keep yourself inspired. Play music and dance if you must. If no one’s around, I dance and make it fun!
Grab your phone or computer and turn on Spotify, then crank it up. Set yourself up with music that motivates you. If it’s depressing, pick something else. You want something that makes you feel good.
Work until the task is COMPLETE!
Procrastination Hack #5 – Reward Yourself
YAY! You made it! Time for another dance party!
Never forget this part! You want to make sure to reward yourself for the work. While it feels so gratifying to draw a line through those tasks on your to-do list, you also want to reward yourself in other ways. Go on a walk, take a bath, buy yourself a cup of coffee, watch an episode of Gilmore Girls or The Office….whatever is your jam, DO IT.
So there you have it. My 5 procrastination hacks to overcome task overwhelm for good!
